Orazio Borgianni (attributed)
(Rome 1575-1616)
Saint Gregory the Great as Pontiff and Doctor of the Church
Oil on canvas
182,5 x 101 cm
Italian baroque painter, very influenced by Caravaggio. We can find his works in the Prado Museum, Cadiz Museum, Jaen Museum and the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts.
The restoration of this picture has allowed us to better study its attribution. The painting arrives at the workshop in a poor state of conservation: the cleaning of the varnish and dirt accumulated over time have allowed us to recognize the mastery of the painter in the treatment of clothing and brocade. Likewise, the illumination of the lights and shadows so typical of the Caravaggisti has been recovered.
Arsmagazine dedicated an article to this artwork in July 2018.
