Achille Etna Michallon
(1796-1822)

Landscape with church
Oil on canvas
41 x 32,5 cm.

Achille Etna Michallon was a french painter, the first winner of the Prix de Rome in the category of historical painting. He was a disciple of David and Valenciennes and teacher of Corot. We can find his artworks in the London National Gallery and in the Louvre Museum.

In this landscape, after the cleaning of the darkened varnish we can appreciate the delicate execution and technical skills of the painter. The darkening of the varnish layer due to passage of time impeded us from appreciating the thoroughness and fine detail of the artwork.
