Rest in the Flight to Egypt
Oil and gold leaf on a table
104 x 75.9 cm

Currently exhibited at the Museo Diocesano de Jaca
Piece from a larger altarpiece, shows us the time of rest of the Virgin and St. Joseph in their flight to Egypt, collected in the apocryphal Gospels.
Gothic painter of Hispanic-Flemish style, Miguel Ximenez collaborated with Martin Bernart. He was named painter of King Ferdinand the Catholic.
After removing the aged varnish we can clearly see the great quality of the piece, apparent in the color treatment and the brush stroke perfection. The painter’s delicacy is reflected in the details of the background landscape.
Other pieces by the same author can be found in the museums of Zaragoza, MNAC, Prado and Museum of Art of Philadelphia.
