Circle of Miguel Jacinto Meléndez
Portrait of Prince Lluis I
18th century. Near 1712
Oil on canvas
59 x 50,5 cm
Painted with oil technique, this portrait belongs to the circle of Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, court painter of Philip V known by his royal family portraits.
The artwork presented a varnish with a considerable aging, which caused yellowing on the paint layer.
Diagnostic tests were performed since there were indications that the painting could been have made upon a previous painting, on a re-used canvas. The X-ray radiography revealed the underlying picture, a hidden unfinished portrait probably of Philip V, since it’s a royal portrait of an older person.
