Ramon Casas i Carbó
(1866-1932)

Female portrait with mantilla
Oil on canvas
74 x 60 cm

Ramon Casas can be considered one of the maximum exponents of Catalan modernism. Its artistic trajectory is varied and reaches from scenes of the Parisian life until works of social chronicle. Female portraits are well known in his production as in this case in which he represents the Catalan bourgeoisie of that time.
Casas perfectly masters the Impressionist drawing and brushstroke. The cleaning of the aged varnish allows in this case to recover the daring chromatism and the ease of the artist in his way to shape the female figure.
